This great pocket guide to world religions wacky and conventional is a witty yet insightful informative – a first point of reference, a stocking filler or as an initiator of dinner party conversation. I thoroughly recommend this as an accessible volume, which opened up a world of belief that I didn’t know existed. Well-written and not overwhelming, each sect is dealt with in memorable bite sized chunks. An entertaining read and sure to be well received in Christmas stockings!

For anyone who is anybody; a passing knowledge of religions, sects and cults in today’s age is a real godsend. The authors have clearly made a huge – and entirely successful – effort to compile an easy to understand guide to various human beliefs. Just flicking through the book gave me such a better insight into other people’s cultures. I am amazed by how many followers there are of certain faiths of which I have never before encountered. A remarkably interesting compilation which I would suggest ought to be on the Christmas list of every educated person who prides him/herself on their general knowledge.

If you have ever wondered what will be the replacement for Schotts this year then may I venture a suggestion – Great Sects. This book has everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask about religion, but cleverly written and put together. Leave this book by your toilet if you want guests to enjoy their stay. I am still deciding what my new religion is going to be.

What a brilliant read; Small, petite and real neat. It really carries you along, both probing, stimulating, enlightening. It can be what you like; a light hearted read, an important resource, an intellectual challenge. Ideal present for Christmas I would think. I intend to keep mine for some time, and can see it being handed down to the grandchildren when they arrive, as a battered and old friend.
