what a tremendous picture.
@MJLatora — That’s understandable. People have always wanted escapist entertainment, but not entertainment that makes them more depressed — especially in a Great Depression and Mafia era.
There’s a reson for the corny, schmlatzy music at the end. In the early 30’s, it was common for upbeat music to be used at the end of films, especially horror films. America was in both the grips of the Depression, & the rise of organized crime. The newspapers & the streets were filled with horror & despair & sorrow. Movies were vital to the country..an affordable escapist venue. Hollywood didn’t want to add further to the horrors their audience were feeling, so they let them leave smiling.
Absolutely. Sheer horror, the way horror once was and always should be. Laughton is magnificent, the screaming is bone chilling….but at 5:55, when Lugosi gleefulyl says, ” Knives.”, and the creatures repeat it…..one of the scariest moments in all of film.
I feel like dancing every time I hear it! Haha!
Yeah. I just read the Novel. There were elements of the Novel intact, thought it took liberties. Overall, great performances from Laughten and Legosi. Still a Classic Horror Movie. Haha. I loved how the final credit’s music sounded like a 1930’s Foxtrot / Jitterbug — a little to cheerful. I still enjoyed this film. Thanks so much for sharing this!
My back doesn’t seem that hairy anymore
All in all I liked it. It deviated from the book a bit but that’s to be expected.
In hindsight I’m beginning to think Moreau’s crime wasn’t so much that he tampered in God’s domain, but that he was just such an abusive jackass to his creations. Remember, all you aspiring mad scientists; don’t mistreat your creations! It’ll come back to bite you in the ass in the end if you do!
He who raises the scalpel shall go down by the scalpel, the others will just be crucified.
i like freaks better
Creepy movie. I’m in love.
Thanks for posting!
yes, bizarre choice of music for the end!! lol
Always wanted to see this and finally have. Thank you for posting.
worth the wait!
thanks
The end title music is hilarious!
Laughton was incredible here. Thanks for posting. I’ve always loved this movie while finding it strangely unsatisfying at the same time. Is the problem hopelessly wooden Richard Arlen or the fact that Lota got left behind?
Great flick but thats got to be the most inappropriate closing credit music ever.
I know what you mean. Those are some of the best screams I have ever heard. Film historian Gregory William Mank remarked that Dr. Moreau’s cries begin like a lover, being sensually tickled, before exploding into horrible screams. Yet another one of Laughton’s disturbing moments. Who would have thought that Charles Laughton was a first-rate scream queen? lol
One of the first films to give me nightmares, just because of Dr. Moreau’s screams at 06:09
a great last line: “don’t look back.” meaning the island was so horrific that it’s not worth looking back at.
Yes, I’m sure that it did horrify 1933audiences. Many people considered this movie too horrific, which is why it was banned in England (until 1958), several other countries, and several states.
Had it on VHS and now ripped to DVD. Had forgotten I had it until I searched through my collection. Totally agree with you about Moreau’s death – I imagine it truly, truly horrified the cinema audiences of 1932.
This is a great movie, and Dr. Moreau’s demise- perhaps the most horrific death scene in all cinema- never fails to shock people.
Do you have this film on VHS or DVD? I haven’t been able to locate a copy of it on DVD.
