Rev. Jim Jones: Do you want to be home by Christmas?
Feb 3rd, 2010 by MrCult
Interesting audio of the notorious Rev. Jim Jones and his people from the Peoples Temple and Jonestown, Guyana. We all know the horrific and tragic story of this group, yet the FBI collected over 900 audio tapes of the Reverend’s sermons, private talks and discussions, catharsis and taped phone conversations. I will try to post more in the future and also songs from the Peoples Temple Choir. Notice in this audio how a member sounds to either have been drugged or placed in the isolation box by judging the breathy, slurred tone to his speech. Sad.

Later in the tape, it’s so sad that people feel they have to suck up to Jones. Where they take turns talking about how they’d like to kill defectors from the People’s Temple, including their own family members. His laughter is so creepy and disturbing when they talk about wanting to kill and torture for their cause. I see why they did it. I would rather have seen Jones in a good mood, too, if I’d been there.
That poor, sad elderly man who just wanted to see his family for Christmas.
yeah lol. I have that whole audio. I believe its one of those deals where the entire thing is like 3 hours long like some of the tapes thats got like part 4 and like that.
Landesko: Are you referring to the breathiness of that one guy talking about intellectuals? I always wondered about that and can’t find the whole audio to save my life.
If I’m not mistaken either 461 or 462 where he talks about Xmas. The other parts are snippets from various tapes.
What FBI tape number is this from?
Rob: no this was not taken from James Reston. It was taken from a cd that I bought off of ebay and another cd of snippets that you can get the addy from the Alternative website of a guy who remastered the audio on the tapes. Some tapes are quite long and so snippets work fine at times.
Was this taken from the James Reston NPR program “Father Cares”?
I wish I had five minutes with this guy and a few of friends.
he was a very cruel father
i have this audio recording on a disc, with all of the other audio recordings. He was in the insolation box for sure, as in another tape it refers to this moment.
I wonder if his brain was ever examined.
You’re welcome. I enjoyed sharing it.
jim jones has been a main focus for me in school. im working towards counciling. identifying this type of behavior early is key. thank you for posting such a great piece of history. never forget. those who do are condemed to repeat.
Could be Pop Jackson, but he looks like Cole. Cole was the older man that challenged Jones in a meeting by saying, “I heard you said I was plottin’ to leave here.” Jones was like, “Uh, what? I understand you want to speak with me? Why don’t you sit down while you’re ahead.”
The man with the unifromed soldier is Pop Jackson.
Yes, I know Tom Grubbs invented “The Box”, Jones had already admitted to that. Secondly, Reiterman did not know Jones very well. He was just a journalist who came down on the fateful trip with the Congressman. Also, that may be Broussard, I’m not sure as his back is to us.
The isolation box was the invention of I believe Tom Grubbs, the school teacher. The isolation box was placed at the top of a hill first, than put down into a whole, if I remember correctly from Raven, the classic tome by Tim Reiterman. Is that Leon Broussard in the picture w/ the uniformed officer
He felt he was organizing againts ‘insanity’ on behalf of ‘truth’.
He took them step by step though the final end.
I wish someone could have stopped him from ended the lives of so many wonderful people..
They didn’t deserve to die…
Thanks for listening. I will post more in the future. Jones hated anyone to call him ‘crazy’. He would get deeply offended.
This man was crazy BEFORE he went down to Guyana.
It started in childhood (Jim). Check out PBS: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple.
