Picturehouse Cinemas have teamed up with film critic Mark Kermode and BMW to present the Origins Film Season. To celebrate the launch of the new BMW 1 Series, the Origins Film Season shows how two contrasting but equally great works can be born from the same idea. Starting in September, this season curated by Mark Kermode will showcase four pairs of exceptional films. Each pair has a single unifying theme but the two films explore it in different and distinctive ways. Just as the new BMW 1 Series’ sport and urban models embody different interpretations of one classic design, so the Origins Film Season presents movies that spin diverse stories from common roots. Mark Kermode has selected some of his highlights from the past 40 years of film, and each screening will be accompanied by a filmed introduction by Mark. Another classic from Blue Oyster Cult’s 1977 Spectres album, “Godzilla” is an prime example of the awesome guitar rock that this band was famous for. In this song, the Buck Dharma’s stun-guitar work is…..well, stunning! LOL! The song has become one of the band’s most popular songs and it a staple of their live performances. “Godzilla” is my second BOC video for a song which has been done numerous times before, but the obviousness of the match and fun that can be had in making a video, is just too hard to resist. These other versions of videos created from BOC’s “Godzilla” and the famous reptile monster of the same name, have done a fine job….but like I said, it’s just too much fun to resist…..so…..here ya go….”Godzilla”! *Just noticed that I neglected to put include a credit for the movie clips that I used in the video! Elke Sommer (born 5 November 1940), born Baroness Elke Schletz) is a German actress, entertainer and artist. In 1954, she moved to England to be an au pair, to perfect her English and earn a living. She was spotted by film director Vittorio De Sica whilst on holiday in Italy, and started appearing in films there in the late 1950s. She quickly became a noted sex symbol and moved to Hollywood in the early 1960s. She also became one of the most popular pin-up girls of the time, and posed for several pictorials in Playboy Magazine (September 1964 and December 1967). She became one of the top movie actresses of the 1960s and made 99 movie and television appearances between 1959 and 2005, including A Shot in the Dark (1964) with Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, The Art of Love (1965) with James Garner and Dick Van Dyke, The Oscar (1966) with Stephen Boyd, Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! (1966) with Bob Hope, the Bulldog Drummond extravaganza Deadlier Than the Male (1966), and The Wrecking Crew (1969) with Dean Martin; Sommer was the leading lady in each of these films. In 1964, she won the Golden Globe Awards as Most Promising Newcomer Actress for The Prize, a film she co-starred with Paul Newman and Edward G. Robinson. (www.briansack.com) I wrote a satirical piece about this commercial over ten years ago. Imagine my surprise when the actress in it emailed me from South Africa where it was shot. She’d NEVER SEEN her spot – a spot which was a cult classic and spoofed galore, including a Foo Fighters music video. The poor girl had been searching for this spot for over a decade. I thought this was terribly unfresh and searched high and low to no avail. Things looked bleak. Eventually I reached out to friends in high places looking for any way to locate a copy. An advertising friend (now renown for writing the GEICO Caveman ads) found the spot. Though the quality belies its age, I made a nice South African actress very happy. A very Mentos ending indeed.
