Sam (Jonathan Pryce) is brought before his friend Jack Lint (Michael Palin) to be tortured. TM & © Universal (2011) Buy Movie: www.amazon.com Scene: Sam Is Captured – movieclips.com Movie Details: Brazil (1985) – movieclips.com Cast: Michael Palin, Jonathan Pryce Director: Terry Gilliam Producer: Arnon Milchan, Patrick Cassavetti Screenwriter: Charles McKeown, Terry Gilliam, Tom Stoppard Film Description: Brazil is a 1985 film directed by Terry Gilliam. It was written by Gilliam, Charles McKeown, and Tom Stoppard and stars Jonathan Pryce. The film also features Robert De Niro, Kim Greist, Michael Palin, Katherine Helmond, Bob Hoskins, and Ian Holm. John Scalzi’s Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies describes the film as a “dystopian satire”. The film centres on Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce), a man trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living a life in a small apartment, set in a dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines. Brazil’s bureaucratic, totalitarian government is reminiscent of the government depicted in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, except that it has a buffoonish, slapstick quality and lacks a ‘Big Brother’ figure. Jack Mathews, movie critic and author of The Battle of Brazil (1987), described the film as “satirizing the bureaucratic, largely dysfunctional industrial world that had been driving Gilliam crazy all his life”. Though a success in Europe …
The film stars Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides, and includes an ensemble of well-known American and European actors in supporting roles. It was filmed at the Churubusco Studios in Mexico City and included a soundtrack by the band Toto. As in the novel, the central plot concerns a young man foretold in prophecy as the “Kwisatz Haderach” who will protect the titular desert planet from the malevolent House Harkonnen with the aid of native Fremen. After the success of the novel, attempts to adapt Dune for a film began as early as 1971. A lengthy process of development hell followed throughout the 1970s, during which Arthur P. Jacobs, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Ridley Scott all tried to bring their vision to the screen. In 1981, David Lynch was hired as director by executive producer Dino De Laurentiis. The film was not well-received by critics and performed poorly at the American box office at the time. Upon its release …
