the locals went and took everything. buildings, furniture, EVERYTHING. there’s nothing left but weeds and one small rusted tractor (the locals probably couldn’t figure out how to start it to steal it too).

I don’t think you can flat out blame the members who “chose” and however many were forced to take cyanide. Events like these happen so commonly in human history and humans behave the same way time after time. Most humans will do horrible things if authority or the group tells them to. Humans are capable of great good but also tragic and criminal stupidity when they conform in a violent manner.
